Working late one night in college William Quigley found a current 1983 Whitney Museum catalog of Willem De Kooning catalog. That weekend he took an Amtrak train to NY to see the Retrospect. De Kooning became his favorite painter. Quigley was fortunate to meet and show with De Kooning in a few group shows in 1989 through Manny Silverman Gallery. The impact had such significance he vowed to move out east one day. In 2013 deciding it may be a good time to look for new inspiration he found an old mechanics garage on Craigs List in East Hampton and made it into his studio. Ironically the property’s owner Chris Schenck was De Kooning’s neighbor in Springs, and had quite a few stories to tell. Its When He First Broke Off from the other Fellas was the first painting he started working on in the new space.
